Kerloo Cellars is thrilled to present an inaugural vintage sourced entirely from two illustrious Walla Walla vineyards: Va Piano and Les Collines.
Va Piano Vineyard. Owner/Viticulturalist Justin Wylie has a reputation for stopping at nothing in his commitment to sustainably farming his site. With roughly 20 acres of red varietals he produces some of the best fruit in the area. We recognize it's a privilege to source grapes from such a brilliantly handled site. In fact, we're among Walla Walla's most celebrated producers — L'Ecole #41, Gramercy Cellars, and Va Piano Vineyards. Va Piano vineyard, which has mostly silt loam for soil, offers power and balance to Kerloo's Syrahs. Harvesting from blocks 4 and 6, the only two blocks at the vineyard planted with Syrah, is done mid- to late-October, depending on how Mother Nature and winemaker Ryan Crane are feeling.
Les Collines. Meaning "the foothills" in French, Les Collines is a 240-acre vineyard sustainably farmed and certified salmon safe, with steep elevation changes from the base of the vineyard to the top. Managed by Shane McKibben, this exceedingly special vineyard site is amongst the leaders in minimal-input farming. In Ryan's words, "this site is truly a diamond in the rough. It is so different in flavor profile and mouthfeel than any other vineyard in Walla Walla. With crazy gamey-ness, lavender, and rose petals this site rocks!" Kerloo Cellars tiny inaugural production made room for a whopping 70 cases from two blocks (30 and 50) with no intention of scaling back. Les Collines, like Va Piano, boasts an impressive list of winemakers who source the grapes. Lured in by the unique flavor profile, and reinvigorated by comparisons to Northern Rhone (although distinctly new world overall), true lovers of the world's Syrah are quick to recognize the appeal and potential for longevity of Les Collines' fruit.
Kerloo Cellars' commitment to the best possible sourcing is an unwavering promise, and may someday lead to vineyards in Yakima as well. Until then, according to Ryan, it's "Walla Walla all day for Syrah!"
